In The Rehearsal Room
The Time Is Now
#Q&A with Co-Creator, Ari Palani
What would people see if they walked into your rehearsals?
I'd be working with the kids; laughing and making jokes, putting out fires, talking about feelings and discuss the work we’re about to do! Aleea Monsour (co-creator) would probably be doing the dirty work and getting the show ready, while Dave Burton (co-creator) would be sitting in the corner typing away!
What is your team dynamic?
The three co-creators, myself, Aleea and David, work really well together - and well with the kids. Aleea and I worked together for La Boite's 2020 show The Neighbourhood, and Dave and I went to university together! Dave is the writer, and Aleea and I build what that scene is going to look like. From there, we put it together for a run-through, and all of a sudden the words, the work and how it’s going to happen emerges onstage.
It's beautiful to work with kids on this level and devise a work with their voices!
Why do you think audiences should see the time is now?
Audiences should see The Time Is Now because that's what the title is! "The time is now" for a lot of young people - whether that's in a scientific sense, a climate sense, an economic sense... there’s a lot of things that are time sensitive. This work delves into these political matters, but also explores what happens to childhood when responsibility is placed on children early on.
What do you think is the most surprising about the show?
I think as adults, we often forget that young people inspire us and can inspire us! Adults get stuck in this mindset of "we’re grown up" and "we know what we’re doing", but in actual fact, we were all once kids and we know what that’s like. I think audiences will be surprised about their connection to the show.
If you could describe the show in 3 words what would it be?
Powerful, challenging and playful!
