Artistic Director David Berthold wrote:
Ionesco’s The Chairs marked choreographer Brian Lucas’ directorial debut at La Boite and the reunion of two consummate Queensland actors, Jennifer Flowers and Eugene Gilfedder. Jennifer had not been on a Brisbane stage in over ten years. The production was detailed, delicate and brave, and tickled many, but sadly did not draw the crowds we expected.
The critics said:
This is wonderful theatre: irreverent, ridiculous and hilarious. There’s slapstick, pathos and the most astonishing performances... Trying to describe their performances leaves me in danger of suffocating in superlatives. They are mesmerising, awe-inspiring, pitiful and terrifying. They make sense of nonsense and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary and hilarious. - Katherine Lyall-Watson, ourbrisbane.com
In Flowers and Gilfedder we have two of Brisbane’s finest at the top of their game. A joy to watch...tremendous fun...incredibly entertaining. - Douglas Kennedy, 612 ABC
Casting Eugene Gilfedder and Jennifer Flowers... was a stroke of genius, their presence on stage and the energy with which they held their roles was hilarious, terrifying and incredibly moving. The Chairs is vital theatre to see this season. - Claire Renton, Scene Magazine
