Rio Saki and Other Falling Debris
Although programmed as ‘high risk’, Shaun Charles’ play Rio Saki and Other Falling Debris, premiered at La Boite and directed by Sean Mee, far exceeded expectations.
Its R rating attracted excellent media coverage and a young adult audience that filled the theatre to near capacity every night of its run. The play, “a vivid comment on our search for meaning in the latter half of the millennium”(Annual Report 1999) was the 1997 co-winner of Queensland Theatre Company’s George Landen Dann Playwriting Award.
The play, set in Australia, is about six people with four days to live, set in "an Australia we no longer recognise, a world distorted by fear and the desperation of people whose life is about to end" (City News, August 19, 1999).
