FIERCE WOMEN, BOLD STORYTELLING AND A THEATRICAL ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE: LA BOITE THEATRE PRESENTS EAT SLAY ZOMBIE

La Boite Theatre’s premiere of Eat Slay Zombie storms the Roundhouse Theatre from 14 to 30 May, delivering a genre-defying work that fuses horror, comedy, music and unapologetic spectacle.
The bold new production by playwright Alinta McGrady imagines
a surreal, hyper-charged world where the zombie apocalypse has arrived and TikTok has become the primary way to communicate.
Inside a bowling alley-turned-bunker, Sheree and Tash document their survival through their online personas @BLKBUNKERBTCHES, sharing everything from zombie kill tallies to prepper-style doomsday tutorials. Their isolated existence is challenged when another survivor turns up, forcing them to make big decisions about how they navigate a world that is actively trying to kill them. Bringing the production to the stage are Githabul-Migunberri-Yugumbeh woman Alinta McGrady and Samoan-Australian artist Lisa Fa’alafi, two creative forces renowned for their disruptive, mixed-genre storytelling that draws on pop culture and hip hop.
Playwright and co-director McGrady says the world of Eat Slay Zombie draws on familiar elements from our own world, like friendship and social media, amped up for urgency and entertainment. “Eat Slay Zombie is chaotic, funny and hyper-theatrical; it follows two fierce women navigating survival together when everything around them is falling apart,” she said. “While humour and spectacle are centre stage, it’s grounded in the relationship between these two women and the ways we hold onto each other during times of uncertainty.”
Eat Slay Zombie blends live performance with music, movement and striking visual design to create a theatrical world that feels energetic, layered and right for this time.
The soundtrack features music by First Nations artists, including BARKAA, Miss Kaninna and TJAKA, woven through the storytelling as both atmosphere and expression.
With a career spanning globally acclaimed productions, co-director Lisa Fa’alafi says the production pushes contemporary theatre into bold new territory. “This production is a genre-defying, full-bodied theatrical experience that brings together music, choreography, design and performance in a way that feels bold and unapologetic,” Fa’alafi said.
“Songs erupt from phone screens, dance routines spill out of viral videos and digital culture collides with live perfromance to create something fast, funny and high energy.”
“But at its core, it’s an intimate story and we’re excited for audiences to come along for that journey.”
The cast features Juliette Coates, Shahnee Hunter and Jalen Sutcliffe, supported by an impressive creative team including La Boite Artistic Director and CEO Courtney Stewart as dramaturg and set designer Rozina Suliman.
For McGrady and Fa’alafi, the production represents the power of collaboration and creative community.
“Co-directing this work has been about building a room where everyone feels safe, celebrated and able to bring their ideas forward,” McGrady said.
“There’s laughter, there’s experimentation, there’s a real sense of collective creativity and that’s the energy we want audiences to feel when they walk into the theatre.”
Eat Slay Zombie plays at La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre from 14 to 30 May, with its official opening night on Saturday 16 May.
