Vale Jim Vilé, Managing Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre 1986 - 1989

La Boite Theatre pays tribute to Jim Vilé — a visionary artistic leader, generous mentor, and important driver in Brisbane’s performing arts community.
Jim served as Managing Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre from 1986 - 1989, guiding the company through an era of bold creativity and ambitious storytelling. Jim’s legacy at La Boite is one of innovation, generosity, and unwavering commitment to artists and audiences alike.
His journey in the arts began in Perth, before further training in Manchester and Leeds. He would go on to establish companies, shape programs and nurture emerging talent across Australia and abroad — from founding the Gidan Makama Dance/Drama Company in Kano, Nigeria to his pioneering work at the University of Adelaide’s Centre for the Performing Arts and the Theatre Guild Ensemble.
Across a career involved in more than 160 productions as director, actor, dramaturg and writer, Jim brought his artistry to theatre, opera, music theatre and dance drama in Queensland, South Australia, Nigeria and England. His influence in the community included serving on numerous committees, delivering workshops across the country, and raising vital support for creative development in regional and Indigenous communities.
Jim also contributed significantly to the wider industry as state secretary for Actors’ Equity (MEAA) in the mid-1990s, and later shaped young artists through teaching roles at Griffith University, QUT and USQ. Before he retired from full-time work, he led the QAC InSchools program, bringing high-quality theatre experiences to young people across Queensland.
La Boite honours Jim’s extraordinary contribution to our theatre and to the cultural life of Queensland. His passion, energy and wisdom is woven into the very DNA of the company.
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife - dear friend of La Boite, Sue Rider - family, friends and the many artists who were inspired by him.
Vale, Jim.
