LA BOITE THEATRE SECURES QUEENSLAND ARTS PROJECT FUND SUPPORT TO EXPAND FLAGSHIP ARTIST DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE, ASSEMBLY

La Boite Theatre has been awarded $60,853 through Round 1 of the Queensland Arts Project Fund to further develop Assembly, its dynamic artist development initiative supporting emerging Queensland theatre-makers. The funding includes $6,500 in access support, enabling greater inclusion for artists and audiences with disability.
Now in its eighth year, Assembly nurtures new voices through mentorship, professional training and collaboration, culminating in the creation of new work. The program provides participants with hands-on experience within a leading producing theatre company.
Established in 2019, Assembly has worked with 64 writers, 64 directors and 80 actors, forming a growing alumni network of early-career artists shaping the state’s creative landscape.
This new funding, supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, will enable La Boite to establish Assembly Pathways — new initiatives designed to support outstanding alumni to further develop their practice through deeper, more immersive opportunities with the company.
Courtney Stewart, Artistic Director & CEO, La Boite Theatre, said, “Assembly has become a vital engine for new work and new voices in Queensland. This investment allows us to extend that impact, creating meaningful pathways for artists to continue their development beyond the program and into sustainable careers. It’s about backing artists at a pivotal moment and ensuring their ideas have the space and support to grow.”
The program will be facilitated by La Boite’s Senior Artistic Producer, Jess Bunz, who works closely with participants to support artistic growth, experimentation and connection across the sector.
“Assembly is about giving artists the tools, time and confidence to take creative risks. Through this next phase, we’re excited to deepen those relationships and provide more opportunities for artists to stay connected to La Boite as their practice evolves. It’s incredibly rewarding to see these artists step into their voice and begin shaping the future of theatre,” Bunz said.
The Queensland Arts Project Fund supports the development and delivery of new creative work across the state, with $1,790,627 awarded to 37 projects in its first funding round. Additional access funding of up to $10,000 is available through the Fund to support artists and audiences with disability.
La Boite Theatre’s Assembly Pathways initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to artist development, access and the cultivation of bold new work for Queensland stages.
